Biscarrosse

Other Places

Just to the south of La Test de la Buch is Biscarrosse, between the freshwater lakes of Cazaux and Parentis. An attractive feature of the lakes is that they have predominantly sandy beaches, relatively unusual for freshwater lakes.

Lakes and Forest

The lakes have always been associated with aviation, particularly in the days when it was believed that flying boats were the preferred solution. There is still a French air base to the north of Lac Cazaux. I was there on  June 3rd1980 when a bug in a NORAD early warning system caused a scramble of every plane in the NATO alliance. Lying on a beach by the lake with every plane on the base launching under full power, it was easy to imagine that it was the end of the world.
