Bristol

In the fourteenth century Bristol had not the same importance it gained later, after the discovery of America. In the days of sail it always was a difficult port to access because of the narrow river entry and the great difference between high and low tides. Nevertheless it did serve as an alternative route to the North of England and imparticular the rich , powerful marcher lords who lived along the Severn Valley and Welsh border.
