Runnymede

Other Places

A very modest memorial for a very important event.

It is the untouched simplicity of this place which makes it remarkable. Half-way between Slough And Windsor with extensive river frontage, one might have expected it to be built out.

Perhaps it was the river which kept it in its pristine condition. It is called a “water meadow”, which might mean, it floods occasionally.

However, thanks to Andrew MacCallum we know that technically speaking Runnymede meadow is not the actual site of the signing of the Magna Carta. It actually took place on the opposite side of the river, on an island which is privately owned.
