For the early part of her teenage years (1351-1355) Ximene was effectively a prisoner of her uncle, the Comte de Foix. She was isolated in his Pyrenean stronghold. The Comte promoted her externally as the heiress to the lands of Occitan and offers her hand in marriage to the royal houses of Europe. He hoped to gain improved status and wealth from the negotiations.
In the meantime Ximene has accepted the destiny imposed by he grandmother, to create a independent Occitan and restore the Cathar faith. She was innocent enough to believe that if she agreed to fulfil that role that it would happen exactly as it had been scripted for her.
